Chapter 16

Lyra

I made my way toward the lodge, hopeful after Eamon's declaration, but weighed down by everything on my mind. So much had happened in such a short time. I spotted Talon speaking with my father Roland and wandered over.

Roland smiled when he saw me. "Lyra, I was just telling Talon that now would be a good time for you to practice your new magic if you're feeling up to it."

I nodded slowly, considering. "I'd like to try, but first I want to check on Izzy's parents. Make sure they're okay after everything."

Talon's eyes warmed with understanding. "Of course. Izzy and Cressida are with them now. I'll take you there."

I followed Talon a short way from the lodge, to a clearing where Izzy sat with her parents, Cressida at her side. Cressida held out two necklaces, each with a shimmering crystal pendant.

Izzy's face flooded with relief. "The spelled crystals—thank you, Cress. I haven't had a chance to make any myself." She took the necklaces gratefully. "The enchantment is so complex..."

Cressida's smile warmed, her hand gently resting on Izzy's shoulder. In the midst of the darkness that surrounded them, a fleeting moment of lightness and love embraced them both. Their connection radiated with a quiet strength.

Izzy carefully put the crystal necklaces on each of her parents. We waited in silence for a few minutes as the crystals' magic worked to break the Queen's control. Gradually, the glazed look left their eyes. They blinked, confused and disoriented. But then Izzy's mother saw her daughter and whispered her name. Izzy leaned forward into their arms.

I watched the tender reunion between Izzy and her parents, my heart swelling with relief and joy. After the harrowing events in the underground labyrinth, it was a blessing to see them reunited and the Queen's mind control lifted.

Izzy embraced her parents tightly, tears of happiness streaming down her face. They were confused and disoriented after the ordeal, but the recognition in their eyes when they saw their daughter made everything we had gone through worth it.

Cressida came up beside me, a knowing look on her face as we both observed the heartwarming scene. "This is why it's important," she said softly. I knew she was right—this was exactly why we had to keep fighting, despite the immense danger. For moments like this, where love triumphed over the Queen's darkness.

I felt Cressida's hand on my shoulder, grounding me in the present. "One moment at a time," she said gently. I nodded, pushing my worries aside for now.

Alistair approached, telling me that my father had sent him. Apparently, they found a spot to practice my magic, if I was ready. I nodded, eager for the chance to gain better control over my volatile fire magic, especially after the close call with Vorn.

"Lead the way," I said. Talon moved to join us, his steady presence reassuring.

We followed Alistair through the thick forest surrounding the camp, the shade a welcome respite from the harsh sun. He brought us to a small glen, peaceful and remote, but still within the protected grounds.
